February 2021 Prayer Points

There’s change in the US – and a new focus on adaptation globally. We mourn an inspiring leader – and take inspiration from her prayers. Electric cars are taking off – and we’re invited to show our love for creation in prayer and action.

January 2021 Prayer Points

As a new year begins, we bring before God the plans for the 2021 Conference of Parties – and the many plans being made throughout the world for recovery from the COVID pandemic.

December 2020 Prayer Points

This month, we hold in prayer all who are seeking to maintain momentum for climate action – young people in the ‘Mock COP’ and young and old working through different UN programmes. We pray for the forthcoming ‘Climate Ambition Summit’ – where countries will be invited to make major commitments – and for the people working quietly in the background to create detailed plans for change that will help us reach the goal. We lift before God those who have suffered from exceptional hurricanes in Central America, and pray that conversations with Latin American and other indigenous peoples will help to shape our attitudes towards protecting the earth.

November 2020 Prayer Points

Our prayer points this month celebrate the saints who show God’s love in care for creation, pray for the US elections and the UN climate talks that have been postponed, rejoice in God’s abundance, and ask God to guide us in using our money to create positive change.

October 2020 Prayer Points

Our prayer points this month look at a number of areas of life where wise and ethical choices are important – food, money, health and community. We pray for areas suffering from catastrophic flooding and wildfires and note some encouraging steps forward.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s Prayer for Climate Negotiators

Creator God,
You have called us to be keepers of your Earth;
through greed, we have established an economy that destroys the web of life.
We have changed our climate and drown in despair.
Let oceans of justice flow,
May we learn to sustain and renew the life of our Mother, Earth.
We pray for our leaders, custodians of Mother Earth;
as they gather in Paris at the climate talks
May they negotiate with wisdom and fairness,
May they act with compassion and courage,
and lead us in the path of justice for the sake of our children and our children’s children.

A Journeying Prayer

Dear Lord,
You called your disciples
To follow in your way.
You are the Way,
The Truth and the Life,
And so we come,
Seeking to follow
In your footsteps.

Creator of the earth,
Help us to walk lightly
As we journey,
Treasuring the world
You have given us
And cherishing each other.

Advent Prayer from Abp Thabo Makgoba

This is a wonderful prayer to use while lighting the Advent Candle … might you or your church use it on one of the Sundays in Advent?

Spirit of God, You established the dance of Creation;
bring life out of death
bring order out of chaos.
Call us to radical action:
to care for the web of Creation
to share our resources justly
and to work for the renewal of our Mother, Earth.
We light this candle as we commit ourselves to fast and pray for climate justice.

Prayer for St David’s Day (1 March)

March 1st is St David’s Day, celebrated in memory of the patron saint of Wales, St David (or in Welsh, Dewi Sant).  The Anglican Archbishop of Wales, the Most Rev’d Dr Barry Morgan, has written a special prayer for ‘Pray and Fast’:

God our Father,
You called your servant David to uphold the Christian faith amongst the people of Wales,
to encourage them by his observance of fasting and obedience,
and to show them compassion through small acts of great love.
As light is poured onto the mountain-tops and as fresh rain is sprinkled on the hills,
help us to be good carers of one another and of Your great and glorious Creation.

Amen.
